“Chains you can believe in.”
Christians operate in a sort of tension between following the Bible’s instructions to show honour to those in authority (Roman’s 13, which was Hitler’s favourite chapter apparently) when those in authority can be vile, dishonourable individuals. This is further complicated when one lives in a ‘democracy’, where rulers in theory rule by consent of the people but in practice follow another agenda.
But, whatever the political situation we might find ourselves in, we are never expected to trust the government. Showing honour and trusting are two different things and we shouldn’t confuse the two. Additionally, as Christians we should also seek truth in all areas of life, not just the ‘spiritual’ areas. And sometimes, politics and truth are mutually exclusive.
Finally, we have Jesus as our model. He crossed swords, metaphorically, with both religious and state power. Remember, it was a representative of state power, Pilate, who said, “What is truth?” Ultimately, all Truth resides in Jesus Christ. He is the Truth. Truth brings light. Without truth in day to day life, we end up being manipulated, that is, in the chains of untruths and doublespeak used by the manipulators.
Daniel Ellsberg, the former US military analyst who released the pentagon papers in 1971, appeared on MSNBC today with Dylan Ratigan. He said he fears for the safety of Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, who is reportedly on the verge of leaking secret State Department cables. The Daily Beast reports that Assange is currently being sought by the Pentagon, and Ellsberg advises him not to reveal his whereabouts.
“We have after all for the first time, that I ever perhaps in any democratic country, we have a president who has announced that he feels he has the right to use special operations operatives against anyone abroad, that he thinks is associated with terrorism,” says Ellsberg. “Now as I look at Assange’s case, they’re worried that he will reveal current threats. I would have to say puts his well-being, his physical life, in some danger now. And I say that with anguish. I think it’s astonishing that an American president should have put out that policy and he’s not getting these resistance from it, from Congress, the press, the courts or anything. It’s an amazing development that I think Assange would do well to keep his whereabouts unknown.”

The chain we all carry inside ourselves is the chain of self-deception about the truth concerning ourselves. We need the truth deep in our soul to deal with our own nature which is bent. Thats the toughest chain of all.
[Jesus speaking to the religious Jews who thought being ‘good’ externally – being related to Abraham and doing all the rituals without looking at what went on in their minds/hearts – was good enough.]
So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered him, “We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, ‘You will become free’?”
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. I know that you are offspring of Abraham; yet you seek to kill me because my word finds no place in you. I speak of what I have seen with my Father, and you do what you have heard from your father.” Jesus John 8:31-38 ESV
